The Center for American Studies (CAS) at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is a renowned academic initiative that endeavors to enhance the comprehension of the United States of America in Ukraine. The CAS was founded in 2014 and has rapidly become a hub of cutting-edge research, education, and informational activities in the field of American studies within our country. The center was established by Associate Professor Roman Kalytchak, a double alumnus of the Fulbright program who served as the center’s director from 2014 to 2017. At present, the center is under the guidance of another Fulbright alumnus, Mykhaylo Komarnytskyy, who also holds the position of Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy.

The establishment of the CAS has marked a significant milestone in the development of American studies in Ukraine and the formation of essential institutional groundwork to support it.

The CAS administers the first specialization in American Studies in Ukraine, which was launched in 2011. This distinctive program enables students to gain a comprehensive, discerning, and critical understanding of the United States. Over a decade of successful development, the Center has curated a unique educational program that empowers students to explore all facets of American life, equipping graduates with a broad range of knowledge and skills that enable them to excel globally. The CAS has produced numerous accomplished graduates, with several students participating in prestigious American governmental educational programs such as UGRAD and SUSI (Study of the United States Institutes) in recent years.

The CAS’s academic program offers a holistic and inclusive approach to American studies, bringing together professors with diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The center is renowned for its dynamic and engaging activities, making it a hub of learning, discovery, and intellectual exchange that is unparalleled. The interdisciplinary nature of the program and the continuous participation of international, primarily American, lecturers and practitioners ensure that students gain a well-rounded and comprehensive understanding of American society and culture.

The CAS has spearheaded a diverse range of initiatives, including academic conferences, expert discussions, summer institutes, teacher training, open lectures, and roundtables, conducted in close collaboration with various institutions and organizations such as the Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, the Fulbright Office in Ukraine, the US Embassy in Ukraine, Publishing House “Litopys” (Lviv) and others. The CAS is particularly committed to expanding its institutional and personal connections with the academic community in American studies both in Ukraine and abroad. Its initiatives have played an instrumental role in fostering deeper intercultural exchanges and broader interdisciplinary research on American society, history, and politics in Ukraine.
