The Department of International Security and Strategic Studies of the Faculty of International Relations of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv was established in 2022 as an educational and organizational unit to ensure the implementation of the new educational and professional program “International Security and Crisis Management”, focused on the training of highly qualified international bachelors in accordance with the Industry Standard . At the same time, the dynamic transformations of the international system and the emergence of new challenges and threats, the growth of crisis phenomena in international politics determine the actualization of the issue of introducing into the educational process a wide range of educational disciplines in the field of security (security studies) and the direction of strategic studies as a complex of educational and theoretical knowledge and strategic analysis skills, forecasting and developing strategies for solving crisis situations and conflicts. This contributes to the formation of skills and abilities of specialists ready to work in the field of crisis management and security management. The implemented educational program “International Security and Crisis Management” is provided by a working group, which includes scientific and pedagogical staff of the department. One professor, six associate professors, and one assistant work at the department. At the same time, the educational process is provided by candidates of political, historical, economic sciences, doctor of historical sciences, which makes it possible to ensure the preparation and reading of a wide list of educational disciplines of the international, political and security spectrum. Since one of the features of the educational program “International Security and Crisis Management” is the multi-component nature of various spheres of international and regional security and crisis management as a tool for ensuring the effectiveness and flexibility of the national (regional, global) security system in preventing and responding to crisis situations in a diverse and complex space real and potential threats under conditions of a high level of uncertainty, the department’s employees can ensure the appropriate level of training and teaching of various academic disciplines. In addition, the teachers of the department provide teaching of a wide range of academic disciplines for students of other educational programs.

The teaching staff of the department, as a center of educational, methodological and scientific activity in the field of international security and strategic studies, takes an active part in international cooperation as a department, faculty and university with domestic and foreign educational institutions, academic institutions, expert and analytical centers in the field of study and training specialists in national and international security and strategic studies. A separate area of activity is the involvement of partners and participation in scientific and research programs on the issues of conflict resolution, the study of security and peace issues, the initiation of master’s level educational programs in cooperation with leading universities in Europe and the world, where similar departments, departments, and centers work.

On September 30, the Faculty of International Relations of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv hosted a workshop “Crisis Management in the Age of Continuous Competition”, which was organized by the Center for International Security and Partnership with the support of the NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine.
The students were addressed by Vitalijs Rakstins, defense adviser in Great Britain, director of the Department of Crisis Management of the Ministry of Defense of Latvia (2015-2021).
