Since 1995, the Faculty of International Relations at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv has been preparing students for the specialization “Country Studies” within the specialty “International Relations”, and since 1996 – the specialty “Regional Studies”. In 2001 the Department of Regional Studies and International Tourism was created at the Faculty, and the first graduation of specialists: Country Specialists-Internationals. It was a step aimed at eliminating the lack of national knowledge in the work of Ukrainian embassies and representative offices. The department teaches such normative disciplines of the national history profile as “Theoretical Foundations of Regional Studies”, “General Regional Studies”, “Comparative Analysis of Political Systems”, “History of Geopolitical Studies”, “Fundamentals of Geopolitics and Geostrategy”, “Methods of Regional Studies and.

Strengthening integration processes is an objective political, economic process at the present stage of human development, but the most complete development has taken place on the European continent. That is why the Department of Regional Studies and International Tourism has introduced the European Union specialization to train experts with systematic knowledge of the EU’s structure, functions and mechanisms.

Regional studies became a good basis for another specialization of the department – “Economics and organization of international tourism and services”. After all, in today’s world economy, international tourism is the most dynamic industry, which provides a tenth of the world’s gross national product and acts as a regulator of employment. The experience of many countries, including and post-communist, proves that international tourism has contributed to the accumulation of foreign exchange reserves for the transition period. Today, industrial potential revival, especially in Western Ukraine, is unlikely. Instead, industries have emerged that have more natural prerequisites for development and are more attractive to invest in financial and human resources. Since 1995, given the positive impact of tourism on the country’s social processes and economy, tourism has been recognized as a priority industry in Ukraine. In these circumstances, it is important to train highly qualified specialists in the management and marketing of international tourism, specialists who will be directly responsible for the formation, development and location of the national market for tourism services in the world system of international tourism, including specialists who would monitor tourism development and promote Ukraine’s tourism potential at embassies, consulates and representative offices abroad.
